This photograph was taken on a foggy Autumn morning, just before the sunrise. Without the chaos and busyness of the world in view, the morning was reduced to just a hush of intimate silence. The garden bench beckoned an invitation to enter into the tranquility.
Amidst the relentless commotion at the height of His ministry, Jesus recognized the pressure He and and His disciples were facing continually, having no respite to catch their breath or even eat properly. He called them away from the turmoil, to join Him in rest and refreshing.
He still calls us away, alone with Him. He gives us His rest and He fills us with His peace. He reveals His mysteries to our weary, seeking souls. Through this poignantly serene photograph, I want to emphasize the plea of God for His followers to spend restful time alone with Him. His concern is not the drivenness to accomplish at any cost, but thoughtfulness in tenderly caring for His Beloved, then and now. He understands our limitations.
We often need a reminder to leave this world’s distractions for a time with the Lord, and perhaps also time alone with our loved ones. Deepening relationships in heaven and on this earth requires intimate, quality time, uncomplicated by expectations and commitments. Here is our perpetual, joyous invitation from the Ancient of Days:
“Let’s go away to a quiet place and rest awhile!” (Mark 6:31)*
